Life is all about changing. When we don't change along with our surroundings we become unmoveable at all.

The year 2010 is about is close, as so are we.

The past three years have been absolutely wonderful. Charlotte and I have made so many milestones in our lives. We've traveled and met many interesting people. We've suffered loss, found new hope, and experienced what many will never find....a profession at abounds in pure happiness everyday.

I found out I could decorate cakes! Who knew? Certainly not me.

It has been my life-long desire to cook and serve the public...a joke around our house...and found it to be every bit as exhausting and excilerating as I had hoped it to be.

As we close our door and say "good-bye", we do so with humble hearts. It is no small thing to please others with your talents. Food is a very personal thing and we have always taken it very seriously.

I want to wish all our friends a healthy, happy and properous New Year.

As for me, I don't know where the wind will blow next, but I intend to pursue life with a venegance!

The Best is yet to come!

Tallulah Academy Comes To Visit For Gingerbread House Decorating!

We have belovedly named our shop The Sugar Shack and today it has never earned it's named more!!
Tallulah Academy's preschool class made the trek out in the cold, rainly weather to come to the shop and decorate Gingerbread Houses!
The kids were absolutely precious and everyone seemed to have a great time.
There was, ofcourse, a gumdrop or two eated during the whole process, but in all, I was amazed at the different houses decorated today.
I hope the mommies and teachers that braved the weather had a great time too! We had them for an hour and I it seemed to pass so quickly.
I sure hope they all sleep good tonight when they come down off the sugar-high they've been on today!

This is one of those rare times when I make a cake for a family member AND do all the party decorations and refreshments. My granddaughter Ashley celebrated her eleventh birthday with a GREASE themed party. She's the cutie with the black leather jacket and blonde hair.

Our son-in-law was D.J. and we played the original soundtrack from the movie. There were poodle skirts and black leather jackets everywhere. The kitchen at the facility where we held the party was turned into a diner where everyone enjoyed Rootbeer Floats, Cupcakes and Cookies, Hot Dogs, and Nachos.

The cake really turned out terrific! I knew I wanted the typical colors of the 50's era and I thought of the jukebox last minute.

There was alot of twisting and hand jiving! It was a complete success, but, most importantly, Ashley was happy!

Toy Story 3 Cookie Cakes

Lexi and Tyde are cousins who decided to share their birthday parties. So, Toy Story 3's "Woody" & "Jessie" made a guest appearance at the party in the shape of giant chocolate chip cookies.
Each cookie cake is 12" diameter and depending on how you serve them, one cookie cake will serve about ten people. Ofcourse, if your clan is like mine when it comes to chocolate chip cookies, you better order up!

We've missed ya'll...huh....kinda!

Charlotte and I have had a wonderful week away from SUGAR, CUPCAKES, BUTTER AND FOOD

DYE!

BUT... it's back to the bump and grind on Monday.

Let me just fill you in on the details of my trip,mainly because I haven't even talked to Charlotte to know anything about her trip. I give you the details later. Promise. Pinky Promise.

I left last Sunday to go spend a few days with my momma. Some of you know that I lost my father in August after he suffered a stroke and I haven't been able to go back to Arkansas to visit Momma since then. So, I packed some "seasonable clothing" in hopes that the temperatures would be cooler. Wrong! Except for the day I left to come home, the temperatures were still in the high 80's. But, the colors were beautiful and I had a lovely visit. I took my momma to have her hair done on Monday. We ate at her favorite place and then we trekked up the mountain to visit with my Aunt(s) and cousin. Aunt Johnnie came up from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. and I haven't seen her in a coon's age, as Momma would say. We have tea and fruitcake and laughed and discussed illegal aliens and Sara Palin and pretty much straighted out what is wrong in this country in the course of about 3 hours. Mr. Obama, are you taking notes here.

On Tuesday, I took Momma to have a manicure and pedicure. Wow, I couldn't believe she would love, love love it has much as she did! First, she said NO! to color polish on her toes, but with some tipping, I convinced the attendant to paint them puppies. And ya know what? She loved them!

I can't tell you how much fun I had watching her! Momma is the kind of woman that thought nail polish was the sign of a "woman of the night", to put it mildly.

I came home rested, refreshed and filled to the brim with happiness from those few days I spent with her. I love cooking for her and my dad always looked forward to my visits because he knew there would be cornbread, beans, collards or turnips and sweet iced tea.

I sure miss him.

But, as things always seem to go, I had to leave too early and head back to reality.

My husband was glad to see me return. He didn't have any clean socks and wasn't sure about dinner.

I hope to get away again and go back to visit with Momma and go back to the nail salon. This time I promise to have pictures!

So, this is the OFFICIAL NOTICE of my return.

As for Charlotte, I hope she has had a good trip and is ready to get busy, because the HOLIDAY'S ARE HERE!

How precious is this? I love farm-related anything. The little animals on this cake and the cupcakes will make all the little kiddies smile! I think this is the most original idea we've done in a long time and I couldn't have been more pleased with the turnout of the barn cake. That's what it's like to raise little girls. Taylor was able to have all her dreams come true with a "Spa Party" this past Saturday. There was alot primping and pampering going on over at B Bella salon. Nail polish and lipstick, and lots of pretending made for a wonderful party.
A cake with all the nice little things that girls like was the perfect cake for Taylor. This is a magical time and I certainly hope Taylor had a magical birthday she will always remember.

Hunting Season is Getting Closer and Closer!!!

Which the beginning of hunting season nearing and the fall colors being displayed everywhere, cakes are a relection of the season. In one week we had orders for hunting cakes! NEW edible transfers are used on the two cakes shown above. They are camoflauge and the "wrapped" transfer will melt into the buttercream frosting and is a taste of mild sugar content. If you know someone who is into hunting, and that means most of the male population in this area, call us and let us make their cake.

Alice in Wonderland Party

This past Saturday was very special to one little girl who celebrated her sixth birthday with a Tea Party straight out of the pages of Alice in Wonderland. Reagan is Charlotte's granddaughter, so we were able to help out with the party. Between all three of us, Charlotte, Kristin and myself, we had the best time pulling out and putting up the goods for this party. All three of us own Fiesta dishes, so the table was set with teacups, saucers, plates and more.

Kristin found the cutest black and white polka dotted plates to use and Charlotte and I provided all the tiny bottles with "Drink Me" tied on them, along with the colored bottles holding flowers.
The cake was a three-tiered, topsy-turvy design with all the characters from the story, compliments of eBay.

A Candy Bar was set up for each guest to fill her bag with all sorts of goodies.

Everyone had a grand time and the food was so good. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than with a room full of little girls (an a couple of brothers)!

Whew...what a week this has been! Besides the huge amount of orders we had to put out, Charlotte and I catered a luncheon for Representative Rodney Alexander on Tuesday. There was a great turnout and I hope they all were pleased with their lunch and I KNOW they enjoyed the informative message that Mr. Alexander brought. I met Courtney online, on Facebook. Until last Friday, we have never met in person. Courtney asked us to make the cakes for her approaching marriage and over the past month or so, we visited off and on about the cakes. This was the first time I have made a cake, delivered it and met the person all at the same time. Maybe we were both taking a bit of a chance, but, I would do it again. Courtney is a very sincere and sweet young woman who only wanted a beautiful wedding and a beautiful wedding cake. She could have gone to any of the wonderful bakeries in the Monroe area, but, she asked us! I am so proud to present this cakes, not because of their appearance, but because it is an example of how two people can trust and be trusted to do the right thing. I could have been one of those kind of people that would take the money and run! We all know there are those kinds of people out there. Courtney would have been so disappointed! That makes me hurt inside to think of this situation. But, everything was beautiful and she had a smile I will always remember. Congratulations Courtney. Have a beautiful life together!

I wish I had taken my camera and shot some pictures of the party site where this cake was delivered! This was one cute party! First, there's the cake, poodle and PINK. Then, Two Friends Catering made some delicious party foods for 5 yr. olds. There were "Pigs in a Blanket", Pizza Pockets, Pink Cheese and Crackers and cupcakes! The mommy of this precious birthday cake had make a "Pin the Tail on the Poodle" game for the children. There was a jar of pink Frooties for each children to guess the number in the jar. Then, the chairs were placed in a circle to play "Musical Chairs" with one little difference. Someone would read a story about a little pink poodle that had all kinds of adventures. When the words Pink Poodle were read, everyone had to take a seat as fast as they could! Oh, what fun this must have been!! Darn it, where is my brain? Should have taken pictures!!

This is the busiest summer Two Friends Catering has had yet! I'm not complaining...oh, no, no,no...just saying.
We have made so many cakes in the past weeks that I haven't been able to get them all up on the blog and for this I do apologize. It is important to us to post all the cakes we make because alot of times this is the only way loved ones from far off can keep up with parties and such.

Dora & Diego Cake, LSU and Country Wedding Cake

While I am not a big fan of ordinary sheet cakes like you can pick up at the supermarkets, I do see the practically of serving a sheet cake. It is obviously easily to cut than a round cake and it will generally serve more people. However, let me say this...DECORATIONS ARE LIMITED. This is probably my main issue with sheet cakes. I have to be able to produce a cake with "special character" and I feel very limited doing this on sheet cakes. Don't get me wrong...I can do it...but, I just don't like to. Now, don't worry, if you order a sheet cake I will not give you any back talk. Just keep in mind that Two Friends Catering is based on personal attention and creativity. We strive to make each and every cake personal to the receiver. This makes our cakes stand out amongst the Walmart or Kroger cakes that come from a kit. Sometimes budgets mandate a sheet cake of these likes, but we are not about that. We want to provide our area with the same type of cakes normally only available from a special bakery. This sets apart and it's really kind of neat to think that somewhere over here in "the land of poverty" that there is a place you can get a cake you can't find anywhere for miles away. So, next time you need a cake...please consider letting us create a one-of-a-kind, exceptionally delicious cake that will bring smiles and giggles to your taste buds! Oh! La, La...Bridal Lingerie Party

Last Thursday night Charlotte and I hosted a "Girlie Pary" for our bride-elect. Amaia is not from around here and we all wanted to get to know her a little bit better while showering her with all the nice little things a girl needs for her honeymoon. So, we created is "Paris" themed party, with pink and black as our main color scheme. The bride received some very nice and little bit naughty gifts and her guests enjoyed a beautiful table full of goodies.

The punch pictured above was nicknamed "Tropical Storm" because it is full of all the wonderful flavors of the Carribean. Bananas, pineapple and orange juices, cherry juice, apricot nectar and a simple-syrup frozen to a slushy consistency, making it the hit of the party. We also served our yellow cupcakes in our NEW black and white paper cups, a Mexican Chicken Ring on a stone, our homemade salsa, and finger sandwiches.

On Saturday August 7, 2010, Joshua & Amaia Boyett began their lives together as man and wife. Two Friends Catering prepared a reception for the couple and their guests at The Plantation Hall-The Cotton Museum on beautiful Lake Providence. Over 100 friends and family gathered to celebrate and honor these two young people. The setting was light and whimsical, with touches of Louisiana everywhere. Chicken and pork kabobs, cool summer salads and green beans were served, along with freshly squeezed lemonade.

The Bride's cake was a 3-tiered confection with a middle layer of chocolate and two layers of yellow cake with buttercream filling. The cake was covered with fondant and adored with assorted gum paste flowers that seem to trickle down the front of the cake.

The Groom's cake was red velvet and cream cheese and was iced in buttercream frosting. Since the grooms is a huge Atlanta Brave's fan, a hat, home plate, and ball crested the top. Popcorn and crackerjacks surrounded the cake which was elevated on a cut tree stump.

The couple will be at home in Monroe after a trip to Cancun.

My little neighbor Anna Grace Denny turned 7 yesterday. SEVEN! And to celebrate, she asked eight of her friends to join her for a "Day at the Spa". They had manicures and pedicures and a dance contest.

I designed this little cake with the "Spa" theme in mind and I wanted to make it age appropriate. So, this is what I came up with. Nothing too over-done for a seven year old, but still glamorous for the little diva's.

I was thinking about this the other day, simplicity and the beautiful thereof. I feel that the more simple the design on a cake is best. The two cakes above are basically from a simple concept. There are times when a cake can be frilly, dripping in detail, and completely overdone. Most of our customers are leaning toward the "less is more" rule. Either way, I love detail, but then again, I think white icing and a little bit of "fun" is all in order!

My grandson Luke turned 5 this past week and I made him this cake to celebrate. I thought the dinosaurs looked a little bit scary but Luke wasn't afraid at all.
The cake was huge and very heavy. I made the volcano using chocolate krispie treats and the rocks around the lagoon are edible candy rocks. I used blue piping gel for the water to give it a realistic look. All in all, I was pleased and Luke certainly was, which is all that mattered.

Brown-Rankin Wedding June 19, 2010

Yesterday we had the pleasure of being a part of two of the sweetest young lives, Meagan Brown and Seth Rankin, on their wedding day. The first time I spoke with Meagan on the phone I was sure I would just adore her. The day we had our consultation I was able to meet Seth, a handsome and polite fella, that from the moment he smiled I felt like I had known him forever. These two are headed for a lifetime of happiness.

Seth didn't want chocolate cake for the Groom's Cake, so with a little bit of suggestion, we agreed on an Italian Cream Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. He also did not want any themed cake, but, he was happy with the idea of mimicing the Bride's Cake and boasted to have his initials put on his cake too.

The Bride's cake was our yellow cake recipe, which is so good and moist on it's own. Meagan asked about fillings and decided on a ganache filling between the layers, along with buttercream frosting. I also brushed a Grand Marnier' Simple Syrup between the layers, because orange naturally enchances chocolate.

Although the day was smotheringly humid, we delivered the cakes without any melting. I always hold my breath when delivering a cake, so I was able to take a deep breath of relief!

Claire Clement Turns 5 With A Pool Party!

Kendra Clement ordered the invitations for her daughters birthday party from Prints Charming located here in Lake Providence. When I picked the invitation up, Kendra said to "just make the cake to look exactly like the invitation". Whoa! I wasn't really sure at the time if that was possible, but, little by little, it came together and I just love this cake. It's simplicity is what really gets me. It's a pretty cake without being too fussy.
Sometimes the simpler the better I guess.

Tallulah Country Club Ladies Auxiliary Monthly Luncheon

The ladies of the Tallulah Country Club meet every third Wednesday of every month and have done so for a very long time. When I received the call to ask if Two Friends Catering would consider being the caterer for the luncheons each month, I was happy to accept. Isn't it nice to know that there are still gatherings such as this being held? Members are friends, their daughters and today we had a grandbaby join it on the fun. He's only a few months old so he didn't partake of any of the luncheon goodies, but his grandmama sure enjoyed showing him off.
We decided to go with a simple cold plate for todays lunch because it is just so hot! We served a chicken salad on croissant, a wedge of Laughing Cow spreadable cheese with assorted crackers and fresh summer fruit like blackberries, grapes, orange slices, strawberries and cantalope. For dessert? Well, just because it's hot doesn't mean you have to have a "light" dessert. Cupcakes in hues of green and pink were served up in "fancy" cup liners.
Charlotte and I look forward to serving these ladies again and again. It was our sincere pleasure to do so today!

Sometimes when we have the bride and her mother (or fiance') for a consultation, we will have a variety of mini cakes for them to taste. These are our number one favorites, but certainly not the only choices we offer the bride and groom for their cakes. In fact, next week the grooms cake will be an Italian Cream cake.

When we have extra batter, we bake up a few extra mini's just to keep on hand or to take home to our own families.

This cake tells a story. As you start at the bottom tier, memorabilia ranging from birthplace to school history, wedding date and the birth of babies, you can follow your way to the top and find Mark cruising in his red convertible, taking it easy, having a ball at age 65!

The cake was ordered by his daughter, Michal Ann Hagar Fortenberry as a surprise for her dad.

Each tier of this cake is a different flavor, beginning at the top with a Orange Mandarin Cake followed by Mark's personal favorite, Lemon Cake with Lemon Curd filling. The bottom tier is traditional yellow cake with buttercream filling.

The ceremony was lovely, the dresses divine, the groomsmen so handsome, the music made your mother cry. But the "I Do's" have been said and now it's time to dance, hug necks, throw your bouquet and cut those cakes!

Tori Sullivan wed Robbie Kivett today in a garden wedding beside the pool with friends and family watching with anticipation. Here arethe cakes we made for their reception.

The Grooms Cake is a deep, moist chocolate cake with creamy fudge icing. A ganache was poured over the top and allowed to trinkle down the sides. Chocolate shavings and a medallion and initial made from modeling chocolate completes the decadent look of this Chocolate Overload.

The Brides Cake is a classic two-tier yellow cake with champagne buttercream frosting. A deep brown satin ribbon and teardrop trim along with a shining "K" makes a stunning presentation.

Our granddaughter Victoria Paige Johnson graduated from high school Thursday night. She has ended one chapter of her life only to await the next.

Friends and family gathered after the ceremony to congratulate her on this accomplishment and I made her a cake in the shape of a Tigers Paw, the schools mascot.

I couldn't be prouder of her and all my prayers and admirations are going out to her as she heads into her future.

It's been a busy week and I have talked to many of you and I know you are exhausted. From ballgames, banquets and all those "LASTS" at school, any of you with Seniors have my prayers. Enjoy every moment, it will pass so quickly and then you can rest.

Kentucky Derby, Rain and Wet Roses, and Cake!

Dr. Don Bailey made the annual trek out to Kentucky for the infamous Derby - The Running of the Roses and got all wet! It rained and rained some more and now most of the bluegrass country along with Nashville and the surrounding area is flooded. It was uncertain when he and his wife Kim would make it home but alas, they are home and I'm sure they won't forget this years Kentucky Derby for a while.

On a lighter note, Doc is celebrating a birthday this week and we've made a new friend with Debbie Hallworth of Collin-Hallworth Home Health Agency in Tallulah, La. Debbie called to ask if we could please make Doctor Bailey and Amy Hale birthday cakes for the office. She wanted something very cheery and colorful for Amy. For the doctor, she wanted a Kentucky Derby Cake.

Here they are, both of them. Amy's is colorful, whimsical and is our delicious yellow cake with buttercream frosting and fondant accents.

Doctor Bailey's is a traditional Kentucky Derby Cake recipe, full of chocolate chips, coconut, chopped pecans and good ole Kentucky Bourbon. The cake is a dense sponge that I soaked in bourbon and then a thin glaze of sugar and bourbon was poured over the cake and allowed to sit and soak it all in. The taste is not what you think. It tastes like a Kentucky Bourbon Pie almost. Then the cake is frosted in buttercream which also has a touch of the liquor in it.

I hope they enjoyed their cakes along with office staff and friends.

It's Where I Live

I guess that's what it is...when you get more and more requests for a hunting themed cake...for people of all ages. It doesn't matter if they are turning 1 or 100, in this part of the country hunting is IT!

Miller Holt is all sportsman. He wants guns and deerstands, boots and 4-wheelers. Last year we made him a football helmet cake (see our older posts for the LSU helmet). I hope we get to make next years because I can hardly wait to see what he is into by then.

This is my "Ace of Cakes" cake. It is part edible and part non-edible of course, with the hunting stand on top of it. I LOVE MAKING THESE KIND OF CAKES! They are so much fun. I get to use a little imagination, a little bit of engineering and so of my art skills. The bonus is that my customer gives me rule of rein to do whatever I want. So, if a "cookie-cutter cake" is what lights up your cigar, okay. But, if you can dream it, I would like to make it. I'll be honest and tell you if I don't think it will work, but, I promise to give it my all.

So, in honor of all Sportsman, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU MILLER, here's the first of I hope many more to come of my version of Duff's magic.

Just twenty short years ago, my husband and I were blessed with our youngest son, Michael Tyler. That was just yesterday, wasn't it?

Time slips away when you aren't looking. If you don't watch out, things just seems to pass by and you look back and wonder,
what happened?".

I wanted to celebrate with a little family gathering, just his siblings and nephew's and niece's you know, but I wanted it to be memorable for all of us. Unfortunately, Paul and his family are in Idaho, so they couldn't be here ofcourse. Lynn Kate and Baylor were here, but left for Meridian yesterday to visit Steven. So, a quiet few will assemble, there will be a delicious steak and potato supper and THERE WILL BE CAKE and homemade ice cream!

Since Michael was a baby, he always thought all Birthday Cakes were chocolate. He loves chocolate. The darker, the better! He is a sophomore at Louisiana Tech, so I thought a beautiful LaTech Chocolate Cake was in order.
